For brides heading for a destination wedding, excitement heads the list of emotions at the thought of it, however, this gets a little less exciting when organising everything begins to weigh heavily on their shoulders.

With so many things to plan and coordinate to feel confident that things are well in hand at the venue by the time you board your flight or take the road-trip to your destination. When you figure in venue decor to guests arriving at different times, and making sure that everything is set for your bridal party, you’ll be facing a rather big chunk of ground to cover.

Of course there’s always that slight chance someone might forget something or other outfits get damaged while in transit, however, the one outfit you can’t afford having damaged is your wedding dress! Regardless of the amount of money spent on the dress, transportation of the dress is a very important job.

Time the cleaning of your dress

Most people will get their dress cleaned before the wedding if it’s been in transit. If you must travel with your dress, be sure to liaise with your dressmaker with regard to cleaning instructions for your dress. Book a professional wedding dress cleaner instead of just any old dry-cleaning facility!

Let professionals pack your wedding dress

Once your final fitting is done, speak to your bridal consultant about packing the wedding dress for you so that it will be as safe as possible on its travels. Your bridal consultant has the necessary experience to pack your dress the right way to minimise any chance of it getting damaged in transit.

Packing the wedding dress yourself

If you’ve decided to pack your wedding dress yourself for the trip, here are a few tips that may help ensure that you get the dress safely tucked up for the journey:

Get yourself a travel box or cover for your wedding dress

Invest in acid free tissue paper with which to line the inside of the box

If your dress has a train, place this into the box first with some tissue paper over the train and tuck it in.

Place the rest of your dress into the box ensuring the bodice is facing the top

Add more acid free tissue paper to cover the top of the wedding dress

Place your veil on top of the tissue paper

Secure the box for transportation

When packing everything for your wedding, if you have hoops for your dress, you’ll need to package them separately. You’ll need to remember to check with the airline you are flying with to see what their hand luggage limitations are for you to take the dress on as hand luggage.

Some brides have had their wedding dresses taken onto a flight as general luggage, only to discover that the dress has gone missing, which makes checking out whether you can take it on as hand luggage.
